It seems as though the economies of Las Vegas and Nevada may finally be recovering, as evidenced by new information about the local tourism and gaming industries, which mainly drive the area.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority recently reported that the number of visitors increased by 4.3 percent during September when compared to last year, which is the first yearly increase the city has seen since May 2008. Overall, more than 3 million people came to Las Vegas during September, up from 2.9 million visitors during the same time last year.

5,667 Jobs in Nevada Created by ARRA

ARRAThe American Recovery and Reinvestment Act has helped to create or save more than 5,000 jobs in Nevada.

The federal government recently announced that the $787 billion economic stimulus plan passed early this year has created or saved 5,667 jobs throughout Nevada. So far, Nevada has received $315 million of the $987 million in funding the state is slated to receive from the ARRA.

Overall, Nevada is expected to receive $2.2 billion in stimulus funds, including $700 million in tax savings given to residents and expanded unemployment benefits for for workers who have been laid off.

Jobs in Las Vegas Nevada with US Airways to be Cut

US AirwaysThe decision by US Airways to cut several positions will result in the loss of many jobs in Las Vegas Nevada.

The company recently announced its plan to cut 1,000 jobs and reorganize its operations in an attempt to cut costs and deal with a decline in the airline industry. The jobs, to be cut during the first half of next year, will include about 600 airport passenger and ramp service positions, about 200 pilot positions and about 150 flight attendant positions.

According to news reports, the announcement came after US Airways learned that it loss $80 million, or 60 center per share, during Q3. That follows a loss of $2.3 billion last year.

State of Nevada Jobs Created by Funding for Geothermal Projects

geothermalAn effort to develop geothermal energy could help create more than 1,000 State of Nevada jobs.

Sen. Harry Reid recently announced that Nevada will receive more than $90 million from the Department of Energy for geothermal technology projects.

The funding, from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, is expected to create about 1,100 jobs throughout the state. Of the projects, 20 in Nevada will receive $72.4 million, while five from Reno-based companies outside the state will receive $20.5 million.

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas recently held its Southern Nevada Business Plan contest, which gives local entrepreneurs with good ideas to help the local economy the chance to start their own business. Anyone entering the contest must have an innovative business idea that would create economic growth in the area, whether through jobs or wealth.

"The competition’s goal is help revitalize the economy and inspire business people who may have a great idea but who didn’t have the resources to execute the plan," Steven Phelan, director for the UNLV Center for Entrepreneurship, said.

Nevada Job Opportunities Created by Mining Company

miningAnyone looking for a Nevada job in the mining industry may soon have new opportunities.

The Bureau of Land Management is working with Coeur Rochester, Incorporated to expedite environmental studies necessary to reopen and expand the company's mine near Lovelock, Nevada.

The mine currently employs about 30 workers with a total payroll of about $4 million. The expansion is expected to create up to 200 new jobs and add about $20 million to the company's payroll.
